Grill Casting Maintenance

Every time you use your grill it accumulates soot, ash, and grease. It is important to clean and maintain your grill to ensure that it will look and perform its best for years to come.

Cleaning the exterior of your grill head

• A light coating of vegetable oil can be applied with a soft cloth to add sheen and provide protection to the outside of the casting.
• Cast aluminum is resistant to rust but extreme temperatures and weathering may cause white oxidation, or white spots, on the exterior of your grill head and lid. This surface oxidation can be washed off with a mild soap (such as Dawn) and warm water. (see pictures above)

Cleaning the interior of your grill head

• When the grill is new or clean you can also apply a light coating of vegetable oil to the inside of the grill lid with a soft cloth to give it extra protection from food acids. Only use a light coating of oil as it can build-up and appear sticky if too much is applied.
• Food residue is extremely corrosive and should be cleaned from the grill on a regular basis. If left unattended, over time the acids found in the food residue can corrode the bottom of the grill.

The first step to removing the grease build-up is to gently scrape the lid a putty knife.

To Start…

• Using a putty knife scrape away any grease or debris build-up.
• Use a shop-vac or vacuum to clean up any displaced particles of food, build-up or other debris.

To take the cleaning process a little further…

• Remove the top casing and soak it in hot water & Dawn dish soap.
• After soaking, scrub casting clean with a nylon mesh scrunchy pad and rinse.

If mild dish soap and warm water is not enough to get your grill back to looking its best, don’t worry, we have you covered. Severe weathering of the grill head and lid can be remedied by lightly sanding or rubbing with steel wool to remove any rough or damaged areas. Once you have sanded your grill you will most likely want to repaint the grill head and lid with a high-quality heat-resistant paint (BF1)

SANDING

• Lightly sand with steel wool, medium emery paper or fine sandpaper to remove damaged or oxidized areas
• After sanding rinse grill head and lid with clear water
  

DEGREASER

• Before applying Degreaser Solvent to your gas, electric or charcoal grill, make sure unit is turned off and at ambient temperature.
• Wear rubber gloves and use in a well-ventilated area.
• Clean the grill dry using steel wool or wire brush. Apply Degreaser and allow to soak for 15 minutes. Use a wire brush or abrasive pad on heavy grease accumulations.
• Flush with water and wipe with a wet rag or paper towel.
• A second application may be necessary for heavily greased areas.
• Allow to dry completely before painting.

PAINT

ONLY USE PAINT ON THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR GRILL.

Before paint prep work

• The surface must be free of grease, rust & wax
• Mask off or protect areas from overspray
• Allow can to warm to room temperature before use
• SHAKE can until metal ball rattles, then continue to shake for at least two minutes. When it stops rattling, you have shaken it up completely.

Painting

• Move can with smooth, even, dusting strokes, letting paint become tacky between coats
• Only apply enough paint for coverage; excessive spraying may result in runs
• Never spray with the valve partially open; press the spray tip all the way down
• If spray stops or becomes irregular, rotate spray head from side to side without removing from the valve. This will usually clear the spray head.
• After use, invert can and spray for 2-3 seconds to clear the valve and spray tip before storing

Once you have completed all the painting of your grill head and lid, wait until the paint is completely dry before using the grill.

Now that the outside of your grill is looking great, maybe it is time to clean the inside.
